How Fred learned that writing was the key to his weight loss...

Fred Thibault of Westbrook, ME spent 16 years in the Navy.  He was no stranger to following instructions, taking orders, respecting authority, being responsible and well-disciplined, or physical labor.  So why was losing weight so difficult?  "I had many a tougher assignment than this... or so I thought," he says.

After leaving the Navy in 2003 and starting a family, Fred enjoyed the suburban life while still performing his reserve duties. "I packed on some weight, no longer living on base and being 'in the thick of things' so to speak.  When I would get together with some of my Navy buddies, we would all laugh about it. But, I wasn't the only one that had packed on the pounds, they had too - some of them even more, since some of them were no longer Reserves. Honestly, it was easy to do - after all, when you are on active duty, you're being worked to the bone and monitored every day. Who wouldn't want to enjoy themselves a little after working so hard?  Needless to say, however, I kept barely sneaking by on my Navy physicals," recalls Fred. "The doctor said something to me at my last few visits, but let it go since I was no longer on base."

A year after completing his required reserve work, Fred's weight was at 243 lbs, the highest it had ever been. "I had quite a gut that I was sporting."  Realizing that he needed to trim back, Fred made an effort to watch what he ate and drank. "I cut out drinking beers during the week, and immediately dropped 8 pounds, but that was all. I couldn't figure out why I wasn't losing more. So, I started writing down everything that I typically ate in a day, and looked up the calories per serving for each item and boy, was I surprised. When I thought I was being good, I really wasn't!  For starters, I was eating multiple servings when I thought I was eating one; and secondly, I was eating way too MUCH and way too OFTEN."

Fred set out on a mission to correct this problem, but immediately felt like he was being deprived. "A friend recommended Certiphene, so I ordered some to give it a try. I continued to write down what I ate, giving myself a daily max so that I didn't overdo it. At first, it's hard to remember to write everything down, but you get used to it. After adding in the Certiphene, I found I was less hungry, and eating my daily allowance became much easier."

After losing a total of 60 lbs in 5 months, Fred still writes down what he eats as a way to keep himself in line. "I now have a workout routine, much like I did when I was in the Navy.  I recently took a ride up to Brunswick and told them I wanted to enlist again as a Reserve. The doctors marveled at my progress. When I had my physical, they said that I am in perfect health. I also sent some Certiphene to some of my friends, and now they’re taking it."

Fred's recommendations for jotting it all down:

  • First, write down what you eat every day BEFORE you start any weight loss effort, so that you know what not to do once you're on a diet. Be honest, because this will help you. Don't look up any calorie information until AFTER. After a week, really look at what you have eaten, identify problem areas, and write in the calories and number of servings, adding them up at the end. Now, start your diet.
  • Get a journal, or something that you can easily keep to write in and find everyday.
  • Try to eat at the same times each day, so that you are sure to record them.
  • Make sure to measure what you are eating, and compare that to its nutritional information. Be honest about how many servings you are eating. Write down "1/2 cup of cereal" instead of "cereal," that way, when you go to eat it again, you know that is the amount you should be eating for X amount of calories.
  • Always bring your journal with you. You are more apt to forget to record an unplanned snack than a meal.
  • Compare your weight loss or gains with what you ate that week to see if there are any trends that stick out.
